The Producer
False Bay Vineyards is the brainchild of Paul Boutinot, founder of the acclaimed Waterkloof Estate on the slopes of Schapenberg. An independent company within the Waterkloof family, False Bay exists to prove that real, naturally crafted wine doesn’t have to cost the earth. Every bottle is made by Cellarmaster Nadia Langenegger using grapes from mature, often old, and always naturally balanced vineyards across the Cape’s Coastal Region. Wild yeast, minimal intervention, and zero compromise — that’s the False Bay way. The range has earned seven Platter’s Good Value awards. All wines are vegan-friendly, WWF Biodiversity Champion certified, and WIETA accredited.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2025 vintage Chardonnay comes from a low-yielding site in Robertson, where the combination of limestone-rich soils and warm days tempered by cool breezes produces grapes of remarkable purity and concentration. Low yields mean small, intensely flavoured berries that deliver real depth without the need for oak to prop things up.
In the Cellar
This is Chardonnay stripped back to its purest form. Wild yeast fermentation in stainless steel allows the fruit to speak without oak interference, while extended time on the lees adds nutty, toasty notes and a textural richness that belies the unoaked approach. The result is intense yet delicate — crisp and mineral-driven from first sip to last.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Brilliant pale gold with green flashes.
Nose: Crisp citrus and white peach with a subtle mineral edge. Hints of toasted almond from extended lees contact add a layer of complexity.
Palate: Pure and vibrant, with ripe peach, citrus, and a good depth of flavour that carries effortlessly across the palate. The unoaked style lets the fruit shine while extended lees ageing provides creamy texture and nutty undertones. Bright, natural acidity keeps everything fresh and focused.
Finish: Clean and mineral-driven, with delicate citrus notes that linger beautifully.
Food Pairing
A versatile food wine — try it with grilled linefish and a herb butter, a fresh Caesar salad, or pan-fried chicken with lemon and capers. It’s also lovely alongside a creamy mushroom risotto or simply enjoyed on its own as an aperitif. Serve chilled at 8–10°C.
