The Producer

Survivor is a wine brand born from one of the most unlikely stories in the Cape Winelands. It all began when a Nguni cow leapt from a livestock truck and landed in the vineyards of DB Rust in Swartland. Rather than meet her intended fate, the cow survived — and thrived among the vines, becoming a local legend and the inspiration behind this bold wine range.

Behind the wines stands Pierre Wahl, a member of the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild and the 2016 Diners Club Winemaker of the Year. Known as the “Pope of Pinotage,” Pierre’s winemaking philosophy embraces terroir-driven expression with minimal intervention. His Survivor Reserve Pinotage 2020 earned a coveted Platter’s 5-star rating, while multiple wines in the range have achieved SAWi Platinum recognition.

Vintage & Terroir

The 2023 vintage in Swartland delivered a stellar season for Syrah, with ideal ripening conditions producing fruit of exceptional depth and aromatic complexity. The grapes are sourced from carefully selected low-yielding vineyards on deep red Hutton and Oakleaf soils, complemented by bush vine parcels on decomposed granite. This combination of young trellised vines and mature bush vines brings both freshness and concentration to the final blend. Swartland’s warm Mediterranean climate, tempered by cooling Atlantic breezes, creates an environment perfectly suited to expressive, spice-laden Syrah.

In the Cellar

Pierre Wahl’s winemaking approach with Syrah balances power with finesse. The grapes were destemmed and cold-soaked to extract maximum colour and aromatic intensity before fermentation at controlled temperatures. Extended maceration on the skins built a refined, silky tannin structure, and the wine was subsequently matured in French oak barrels. The oak treatment adds subtle layers of spice and complexity without masking the pure, vibrant fruit expression that is the hallmark of Swartland Syrah.

Tasting Notes

Platter’s 2026, 90 points (Christine Rudman): “Full-ripe berries & plums, with spicy, smoky overtones from 18 months in barrel.”

Appearance: Intense, inky ruby-purple with youthful violet edges.

Nose: Exuberant aromas of ripe blackberry, dark plum and violets, intertwined with liquorice, cloves, fresh thyme and a hint of white pepper.

Palate: Full-bodied yet remarkably polished, with layers of dark fruit, savoury olive tapenade and cracked pepper spice. The tannins are soft and round, providing an elegant backbone to the concentrated flavours.

Finish: Long and warming, with lingering notes of smoked herbs and dark chocolate.

Food Pairing

This youthful Syrah is a superb partner for lamb loin chops off the braai, slow-cooked oxtail or a rich beef shin potjie. It also pairs beautifully with venison pie, chargrilled sosaties or a classic bobotie. For a lighter option, try it with a mushroom and thyme flatbread. Serve at 16–18°C.
